Heather E. Hillesheim graduated with a bachelor's degree in textile chemistry from North Carolina State University. After pursuing alternative teacher certification, she began teaching high school science where she discovered her passion for physics. She later worked as a curriculum developer and teacher for a private online school. Most recently she has been working at an independent private school in Tennessee where she lives with her family.
